What to Wear

The 5 Big Rules

  1. Wear What You Love
Make this your primary consideration. It’s more important to feel great about what you are wearing than how perfect it goes with whatever location we are working. If you’re conflicted between what you love and what you think works, see Rule #2.
  2. Bring Extra Outfits
It’s always good to have a backup outfit for each location, especially when you aren’t sure if your first choice is the best choice. We can help you choose which one is best during your photo shoot.
  3. Layer your outfits
We recommend including outer layers like jackets, sweaters, ponchos, beach covers, coats, etc… in your outfits. They allow us to photograph you with and without the outer layers providing extra looks without requiring full outfit changes. These layers usually help us create a variety of natural poses by giving you something to do with your hands like put them in your jacket pocket, grab your lapel, or hang your jacket over your shoulder.
  4. Accessorize
Hats, jewelry, scarves, balloons, flowers, headbands, handbags, sunglasses and other bling create interest in your portraits. If you are trying to create a specific look from an editorial style photograph, the right accessories can be essential.
  5. Dress For The Weather
Avoid clothing that would not be appropriate for the conditions. You won’t feel or look comfortable in your favorite sundress on an unseasonably cold day or in a sweater on an unseasonably hot day so adjust your planned outfits to the expected conditions so you both look and feel your best during your photo shoot.

Get Creative & Stand Out

Unusual outfit choices can say a lot about your personality and do a lot to make your senior pictures unique. Here are some specific examples that won’t apply to most people, but might just get your creative juices flowing…

  • Dance in your pajamas
  • Sports pictures in a suit or tux
  • Add a tutu to your fashion outfit to show your love of both dance and fashion
  • Bring a softball bat and wear eye black for part of your trashthe dress pictures
  • Do you have a favorite t-shirt with an image or saying that sums up your personality?

General Outfit Suggestions & Inspiration

Your photo shoot plan will, in many cases, describe specifically, what type of outfit we had in mind for each location/idea based on our planning appointment. When outfits are described generally or left TBD, feel free to use these guidelines to help point you in the right direction (or at least out of the wrong one). Keep in mind these are guidelines and suggestions in most cases rather than hard and fast rules. Some of our favorite pics are of seniors who wore an outfit we never would have suggested in a million years and the results were fantastic.

Nature

Great locations for sun dresses, capris, shorts, colorful solid tops. We love to see colors that help you pop out in a nature setting. Avoid greens, golds or busy patterns that might camoflage you depending on the type of nature setting

White-on-White

Long-sleeve white top. We love to see v-necks, button downs, over-sized scoop necks. White camis and tanks are a nice 2nd outfit. Strapless will show off your shoulders, but don’t expect the yearbook to accept it. No short sleeves please!

Fashion

This is for seniors who are really into fashion and/or modeling and the picture is as much about the outfit as the senior. The emphasis is on the details and accessories (e.g. purse/handbag, sunglasses, scarf, hat, shoes jewelry, etc…

Dance Lifestyle

Usually involves dance attire, costumes or form-fitting street clothes you can dance in. The more specific the concept we are shooting, the more specific we usually are in the plan regarding attire.

With Horses

Prom dress, rural fashion, English or Western outfits are all great styles for horses. Avoid wearing horse colors if you plan on doing relationship pictures with your horse.

Grungy Urban

Great locations to dress down to fit in or dress up for contrast. Don’t hesitate to bring out the tux or party dress and class up the neighborhood. Skinny jeans, boots, simple dresses, short skirts with fun tops all work. Black and bold solids work best.

Rural

We love to see seniors dress the part (e.g. overalls, boots, flannels, hoodies, jean shorts and jackets) or for contrast (e.g. colorful prom or party dresses, sports uniforms, dance costumes).

Classic

Long-sleeve black top (or at least dark). Lace or loose knit tops look cool because the detail falls off with the soft focus. Dark camis and tanks can work as a 2nd outfit. No bright colors, no white, and no short sleeves please.

Sports & Sports Composites

We like to see you dress like you would for a game plus any equipment you might not usually bring to a game like a ball, bat, baton etc… Want to look fierce? Think about bringing eye black even if you don’t normally wear it.

Relationships

We prefer coordinated (not necessarily matching) outfits so there is harmony in the couple or group and no one person stands out. If anyone does stand out, it should be you.

Beach

Just about anything goes on the beach. We suggest bold colors that help you stand out. White and khaki are safe choices but a bit overdone. Avoid sandy colors.

Silhouettes

Form fitting outfits will create the most recognizable silhouettes. Avoid loose tops and baggy bottoms, especially if doing action silhouettes, that can make you look much bigger than you are.

Contemporary Urban

Best place for contemporary fashions and to dress it up a little. Probably not the best location to break out your vintage dress or bohemian wardrobe.

Estate

Best to dress like you’re living large. Formal dresses, tuxes, elegant sun dresses, hats, sunglasses, scarves.

Vintage

We suggest vintage clothing or at least something timeless. With vintage it pays to dress the part.

Big Color

Solid, bold colored tops or full length outfits. Patterns can work if they are delicate and when you step back from an outfit it looks predominantly one color. Avoid multi-colored patterns.

Lifestyle

These outfits are usually carefully planned during our planning appointment, but the general idea here is to dress as you would for whatever part of your life we’re reliving for the camera.

With Doggies

Best to dress for the location and avoid dressing the same color as your dog.

<a data-pin-do="embedBoard" data-pin-board-width="400" data-pin-scale-height="240" data-pin-scale-width="80" href="https://www.pinterest.com/seniorsbyphotoj/dog-days"></a>

Trash the Dress

Prom dresses usually hold up well when wet. Sun dresses with thinner material can turn wet-t-shirt on you in a hurry. Best to anticipate how your dress will look on you wet and bring appropriate colored undergarments to avoid distractions.

Beauty Headshots

Bring a variety of fashion tops (formal dresses including strapless and open back options, long sleeve tops and sweaters, jackets, tanks, camis, bustiers, scoop necks, wide necks) – Recommend bringing lots of jewelry: large statement necklaces, simple pearl necklace, large dangly and small elegant earrings, lots and lots and lots of bracelets and rings to create interest when your hands are in the photographs.

On the Road

Road warriors wear colors that pop on the highway – avoid greys.
